The Via Appia Antica, originally called Regina Viarum (Queen of Roads), was built in 312 BC to connect Rome to southern Italy. Lined with ancient ruins, catacombs, and aqueducts, it offers a fascinating journey through history, perfect for a day trip. End the adventure with a scenic lunch by Lake Albano and a visit to the charming papal town of Castel Gandolfo.

Note: Rome’s downtown has a No Traffic Zone (ZTL). If your hotel is inside this area, I will provide
the closest meeting point, usually within a 3-5 minute walk from your hotel.

Itinerary:

• 8:00 AM – Meet at the hotel we begin our day with pick-up from your hotel
• 8:25 AM – Arrival at Porta San Sebastiano (Ancient Roman Gate)
  Quick stop to admire one of the main entrances to ancient Rome
  Next Church of “Quo Vadis” (Historic Church)
  Explore the church where Saint Peter is said to have met Jesus walking toward the city to be crucified again.
• 9:30 AM – Catacombs of San Callisto / Catacombs of San Sebastiano (Early Christian Burial Site)
  We arrive for a guided tour of the Catacombs (€10 ticket). The visit takes about 40 minutes
• 10:20 AM – Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella (Roman Tomb)
  We head to the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella. The interior visit is optional and requires a ticket (visit duration: 20 minutes)
  From Cecilia Metella, you’ll walk toward Villa dei Quintili, enjoying an amazing 40-minute walk
  through history on the ancient Via Appia Antica. See tombs, ruins, and landmarks that have stood
  for centuries, offering a glimpse into Roman life.
• 10:40 AM – Walk to Villa di Capo di Bove (Ancient Roman Villa)
  From Cecilia Metella take a 10-minute walk through Via Appia Antica, where you’ll begin to see the original road and nearby ruins.
  (Entry to Capo di Bove is optional – ticket required, visit duration: 10-15 minutes)
  From Capo di Bove enjoy a  30/40-minutes walk into the heart of Via Appia Antica.
  
• 11:10 AM – Meeting point Via Appia Antica
  we meet at the intersection of Via Appia Antica with Via di Tor Carbone/Via Erode Attico.

  From here we drive to Park of the Acqueducts
  
• 11:30am – we arrive at Parco Dell’Acquedotto, Here you can admire the grandeur of one of the monumental
  Roman aqueducts: the Claudian aqueduct
• 12:00PM – Meet and drive to Castel Gandolfo
  We meet and drive to Castel Gandolfo, which takes around 30 minutes
• 13:00 – 13:20 – Lunch in Castel Gandolfo
  Enjoy a leisurely lunch by Lake Albano. We’ll have approximately 1 hour for this break, with lunch ending around 14:00/14:30
• 14:30 PM – Visit Castel Gandolfo Village (Papal Residence Town)
  After lunch, we’ll take a tour of this charming papal town, known for its picturesque views
• 15:00 PM – Drive back to Rome
  We head back to Rome, arriving at the hotel around 16:00 PM.

Not Included

  Lunch at a trattoria is optional. If you prefer, you can also choose a picnic by the lake
